Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 6- Word Families

I’m so, so glad to have completed Cookie Sheet Volume 6.  Kyle and I have been working on it for quite some time (like, FOREVER) and, I assure you, it’s well worth the wait.  I’m thinking this is now my new favorite!  This volume is jam packed with 43 pages of word family fun.  There are 15 word families represented and 62 unique and colorful pics created by my awesome artist, Kyle.  Most of my teacher friends have been using the Cookie Sheet Activities for their literacy centers, but they also work great for small group instruction.

Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 5: Blends and Digraphs

I’ve been having so much fun creating the cookie sheet activities! Thanks to everyone who has sent emails and comments with suggestions for future volumes.  I love hearing your ideas and it seems like I’ll be busy creating cookie sheet activities for quite some time.  The newest lastest and greatest volume of the cookie sheet activities is designed to teach and practice consonant blends and digraphs.  There are 18 sorting templates!  This activity allows for differentiation as students can sort with either two or four sounds.

Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 5 also contains 10 templates where the students must decide which blend or digraph is contained in the word.  This activity is a little more advanced than the sorting activity.

Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 4

I can’t tell you how much fun I’m having making the cookie sheet activities! As soon as I finish with one volume, I already have 2 or 3 more ideas for upcoming volumes.  I think I’ve been driving Kyle (my wonderful artist) nuts with all the new art I’ve been asking her to make.  She’s such a trooper.  Despite having two very young children she still makes time to create awesome clip art for me to use in these products.   I love it that her pics are so colorful and eye-catching.

A week or so ago I finished Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 4.  This volume targets the skills of identifying beginning sounds in words as well as providing extra practice with those tricky short vowel sounds.   The templates correlate with the reading series we use in our schools (Harcourt).   So, for example, in this reading series, the letter “Mm” is the first letter introduced followed by “Ss”, “Rr” and “Tt”.  So, with the first template, students sort words beginning with the “Mm” and “Ss” sounds.  If you are not using the same reading series and your order of introducing letters is different from ours, no worries, blank templates are available for you to put in your own letters.

All cookie sheet activities allow for differentiation.  I’ve also included templates where students can sort 4 beginning sounds.

Now for those vowel sounds.  I’ve included multiple templates for sorting CVC pictures with the short vowel sounds.  These templates are also differentiated as students can sort pics with either 2 or 3 sounds.

Cookie Sheet Challenge Volume 3: Sight Words

Phew… It’s finally done!  It feels like we’ve been working on Cookie Sheet Challenge Volume 3 forever!  I think that’s because Kyle so wonderfully took the time to draw a unique picture for the nearly 55 sentences contained in the Sight Word Sentences activity.  It was so well worth the wait because the art is AWESOME!   I love the activities in Volume 1 and 2, but I’m going to have to say that Volume 3 is now my new favorite.  Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 3 contains 43 Building Sight Word templates, 11 Sight Word Sentences templates and 9 4-In-A-Row templates.  And did I mention that all activities are designed to be used on a cookie sheet?  That makes the activities perfect for use in your literacy centers.

The 4-In-A-Row activity is great for practing sight words.  You’ll need two players for this game.  Players try to get 4 chips of their color in a row before their opponent.

EarlyMathpicblog

I’ve been having so much fun with the Cookie Sheet Challenge!  For those of you just joining me, I set a goal to see how many fun activities I can make using cookie sheets purchased at Walmart and a can of metal spray paint.  The challenge is to make as many activities as I can until I run out of paint.  So far I’ve painted 6 cookie sheets–that means 6 different activities– and barely made a dent in the can of paint.   I’m going to be quite busy with this project for some time.

Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 2 activities are activities targeting early math skills.  All activities allow for differentiation can be used during small group instruction or as activities within your math centers.  The first activity is number order.  There are five templates for number order 1-10, 4 templates for number order 1-20 and 5 templates for number order 1-100.  Magnetic numbers are used for number order templates 1-10.  I purchase the letters used for CSC Volume 1 and the numbers for CSC Volume 2 online through Banks School Supply.  I’m pretty picky about the shapes of the letters and numbers and I like these the best, but magnet numbers purchased at a dollar store would work just fine.  Click the following link if you want to check out these particular numbers:  Magnetic Numbers through Banks School Supply

The next activity targets basic number concepts.  For this activity, you will need manipulatives for counting.  I use small erasers which I purchase through Oriental Trading since they have seasonal themes and erasers which target student interests such as sports-themed erasers.   I then purchase magnetic business cards which I cut and adhere to the back of the number cards and erasers.

The next activity targets the skills of identifying the numbers before/after, numeral-number word matching, counting using 10-frames and using tallies to represent numbers.  Popsicle sticks are used to make the tallies. The full version includes templates for the numbers 1-20.

The Cookie Sheet Challenge!

CookieSheetV1blogpicfin

It all started with a cookie sheet.  I was observing a student in a kindergarten classroom during literacy center time and in one of the centers the teacher placed magnetic letters on a cookie sheet and the students made words with the letters.  Clever– I’ve seen cookie sheets on Pinterest before and really hadn’t paid much attention.  After leaving the classroom I wondered how many activities can I come up with using a simple cookie sheet.  So my weekend started with a trip to our Habitat for Humanity Restore- hum, no cookie sheets.  No luck at Goodwill and no luck at the Salvation Army.  Couldn’t believe it.  So I traveled over to Walmart and they had cookie sheets for only 88 cents!  I purchased two and a can of Rust-Oleum navy blue high gloss paint for metal.  You really don’t need to paint the cookie sheets, but I have a thing for color coordination.

First use of my newly painted cookie sheet:  ABC Order.  In this activity, the students are given magnetic letters and they simply put the letters in order.  For students who will have difficulty putting all the letters in order, differentiate the activity by placing several letters in strategic positions on the cookie sheet first.  I purchase my magnetic letters online from Banks School Supply as I like the shape of the letters.  Magnetic letters purchased at the dollar store work great.

Second use of my newly painted cookie sheet:  A Rhyming Activity.   I had old business card magnets (you know the kind where you peel off the sticker and stick on a business card for a refrigerator magnet).  I was able to cut 15 small magnets from each card and stick them on the back of the pictures.

Third use of my painted cookie sheet:  A Word Building CVC Activity.  Using those same plastic magnet letters, students build CVC words.

Still a lot of paint left in my paint can!  I am on a mission.  We’ll see how many more activities I can develop until my paint runs out.  Stay tuned!
