My little friend, Eleanor, is just learning the value of money. Sorting activities are the perfect first step in teaching money skills. It certainly helps children identify the differences in the coins. Students first need to understand that the coins differ in size and shape and identify the coins before accurately count coin values. Although you can find plastic coins at any dollar store I’d recommend using real coins. It’s often difficult for our young learners to make that jump between the fake and the real money.

When teaching your students the coins you may wish to place posters within your classroom. Feel free to download these posters too!
