My little friend, Maverick, just loves these file folder activities for learning his numbers. Whenever you can incorporate Play Doh into an activity, it’s sure to be a hit! Whether we’re teaching letters/sounds or numbers, it’s always important to add a hands-on component and Play Doh certainly does the trick. Our Winter Themed File Folder Activities for Early Numeracy were so much fun during centers that I decided to create a similar activity just for Valentine’s Day. Actually, this activity can be used year round, but it’s perfect for February.
There’s a little bit of assembly involved. You’ll have to glue the templates on a file folder and laminate. I used a red file folder, but a manilla file folder will work too. There are templates for the numbers 1-20.
Instead of the snowflake counters for our winter activities, I found these absolutely adorable heart mini erasers through Oriental Trading. You can also find similar erasers at any dollar store or even at your local Walmart. Seasonal mini erasers are ideal for use as counters, but almost any small item (bingo chips) works as well.
I’m pretty particular about the dough. You can absolutely use Play Doh that is purchased at the store. I tend to make my own dough as it is often softer and I can make the amount I need. I also like to use Wilton food coloring as the colors are vibrant! I’ve included the recipe I use of the dough in the downloadable file.
The Valentine’s Day themed File Folder Activities for Early Numeracy can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store or in the Make, Take & Teach website.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
