File Folder Activities Teaching Regular Past Tense
Teaching regular past tense form is one of the very first morphemes (fancy word for a unit of meaning) that we teach our young readers and writers. When we introduce regular past tense we begin with introducing the idea of adding an -ed to the end of a base word means that the action already happened. There are so many ways to make teaching past tense fun. Acting out verbs and then generating sentences describing when the action happened is one way (“I am jumping”, “yesterday I jumped over the rope”) to introduce the concept. Activities such as our file folder activities offer hands-on activities for learning and practicing this concept.

File Folder Past Tense -ed
There’s a little bit of assembly required to create your file folders, but once they are put together they can be used over and over again! They are just perfect for small group intervention or as an activity for your independent literacy centers. The original File Folder Phonics Bundle was so popular that we decided to expand the line to include activities targeting more advanced phonics skills such as past tense forms, plurals, and contractions. They are particularly helpful for our first-grade students as this is often when these concepts are introduced. There are two file folder activities targeting past tense forms in the file folder bundle. The first activity introduces the concept of adding the -ed to indicate past tense. Students read the verb and then the past tense form and sort the words into the appropriate category.
This file folder activity can be purchased separately. It’s also one of the 13 hands-on file folder activities included in the Even More! File Folder Phonics Bundle.

File Folder Sounds of -ed
There are actually three sounds that the -ed ending makes. Sometimes the -ed ending makes the /t/ sound as in “baked”, sometimes the /id/ sound as in “skated” and sometimes the /d/ sound as in “snowed”. Students need to be aware of how and when the -ed makes the different sounds as it will be especially needed when using words in writing.
