Activities for Teaching oi & oy

I’m so excited to have finished the oi/oy phonics bundle. All the activities are laminated and ready to go! These activities were created specifically for independent centers as several versions of each activity are provided so that groups of students can be working at the same. All the activities fit in a 15″L x 11 1/2″W x 3 1/4″H Sterilite container (purchased at Walmart) so that when it is time to teach a specific skill all you need to do is grab the container from the shelf and you’re all set! Easy-peasy. The stackable containers are a great way to store activities.

Each phonics bundle contains 11 hands-on activities for teaching a phonics skill. The bundles contain an anchor chart explaining the phonics rule and a word list. Word lists are always handy during small group instruction as they can be used for writing to dictation or any other activity when you just need examples of words containing the phonics rule.

The self-checking feature of the Write the Word activity makes this activity perfect for centers. To keep the activities organized I placed the cards in a baggie and clipped them to the template with a brass clasp. The answer key is velcroed to the back of the template. When the students have the words written on the template, they simply un-velcro the answer key and check their answers.

The Dry Erase Phonics activity also has a self-checking feature. Students write either oi or oy to complete the word. There are five templates in this bundle.

The word sorting activity can be used during small group instruction or as an independent center activity. This activity can be differentiated as cards with and without the oi or oy are provided. In the picture below, students use a dry erase marker to write either oi or oy within the word and then places the card under the correct heading. They can check their response by turning over the card (full word is written). There are 35 word cards.

The classic game of Bingo is always a favorite with students. No bundle would be complete without it. There are five Bingo boards contained within this bundle.

Five 4-In-A-Row game boards are included too. I love this activity as it’s a fast-paced game which offers multiple practice opportunities for reading the words. Students try to be the first to get 4 of their colored chips in a row. As they are trying to get their row they must be sure to block their opponent.

The I Have Who Has activity is also an old-favorite card game for practicing reading words containing a phonics rule. Students try to be the first player to use all their cards.

Place the oi and oy word cards on a ring and you’ll have ready access to words containing the rule. These are great when you just want to have students practice reading the words.

My fabulous artist, Kyle, created the game boards, Climb and Slide and Bump! templates to correspond with the oi and oy theme. I just love them! There are three classic game board templates. Simply adhered the templates to a file folder and laminate. I use a plastic 3″ spinner which I purchased in bulk online as I have many activities which require a spinner, but a paperclip and pencil will also do the trick. Once laminated, you’ll have these game boards for years and years!

The Climb & Slide activity is a variation of the classic Chutes and Ladders game. This activity just has a twist which lends itself to the theme of the oi/oy bundle. There are three game boards included. Students try to be the first player to reach the top. If the chip lands on a ladder, the player can jump levels, but if it lands on a mud slide, the player must slide down a few levels. This is a fun activity for practicing words containing the rule.

Bump! is a fun activity for two players. There are five Bump! boards contained within this bundle. Each player has 8 chips of the same color. The players take turns rolling the die and covering the number (of course, reads the word). If a mud puddle contains a chip of their partner, the chip can be “bumped” off! Players lock their mud puddle by having two of their colored chips on the spot. Not really quite sure how to play the game? No worries, all the directions are on the back of each game board.
