I have to admit that winter is one of my favorite seasons (followed only by autumn). There are so many outdoor activities up here in the great white north that there’s always something to do. This winter has been off to a slow start so I’m a little late in bringing out all those winter-themed activities. This weekend I had some organizing to do so I thought I’d start with my all time winter themed favorites and share them on the blog.
Hands down the Mitten Match activities are my favorite. My artist, Kyle, created these colorful mitten several years ago and we’ve used them in several activities. The Mitten Match activity for rhyme contains 30 rhyming mitten matches. It’s a popular center activity for my preschool and kindergarten friends. You can easily differentiate the activity by choosing which and how many pairs to use.
The Mitten Match for Rhyme can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store or through the Make, Take & Teach website. The Mitten Match activity is also available for learning the alphabet and beginning vocabulary skills: Mitten Match Beginning Sounds, Mitten Match Vocabulary
Kyle also created these adorable snowmen. This activity is also perfect for Pre K- Kindergarten centers. The snowmen have also been a kid and teacher-approved favorite!
The Build A Snowman for Beginning Sounds can also be found in my online TpT store or through the Make, Take & Teach website. This activity is also available for learning and practicing word families: Build a Snowman Word Families
Now for my first grade friends working on building words and learning sight words we created a few winter-themed activities which can be helpful for either direct instruction or independent practice. The Word Family Penguins activity contains 200 colorful penguins addressing 21 common word families. Again, you’ll want to differentiate this activity by choosing the word families you wish to work with and how many penguins for sorting.
The Word Family Penguins activity can be found in my TpT store or through the Make, Take & Teach website.
The Winter Themed Sight Word Game Boards are great for centers! When you download this file you’ll receive 9 game boards with 4 winter themed designs. We also included 4 blank game boards so that you can add your own words. This activity is available for both the Dolch sight words and the Fry sight words.

There’s nothing too fancy about the Snowball Fight activity. It’s super easy to make and also to play. Often it’s these most simple activities that are the most popular. I love this game as it’s fast paced and allows for tons of practice opportunities. Students simply take turns choosing a snowball and reading the word. If the snowball bear is picked, all the snowballs must be put back in the pile and the game continues. The player with the most snowballs at the end of the time wins the game. This activity is also available for the Alphabet, CVC Words, and Blend and Digraphs.
The Snowball Fight Dolch Sight Word activity is available in my TpT store or through the Make, Take & Teach website.
Those short vowel sounds can be so tricky. Sorting activities can really help students hear the differences in the sounds. The Sorting Snowballs activity is one of my favorites for addressing issues with short vowel sounds. The templates are differentiated as you can work with two vowels only, 3 or 4 or with all 5 vowels for those students who are quickly learning this skill. Both pictures and word are available within this download.

Well, those are my go-to winter themed activities for Pre K, K and first grade. Now back to organizing 🙂
