Teaching the Magic e Rule Using Word Sorts

Those vowels can be so tricky for our young readers. After learning the letters and sounds of the alphabet, we introduce the concept that vowels can have two sounds- a short sound and a long sound where the vowel says its name. One of the first phonics rules that we teach is the “magic e” rule. This rule states that when an “e” is close behind another vowel (with no more than one letter in between) the first vowel says its name and the “e” is usually silent. The best way to introduce this concept is by using word sorts – especially using words which emphasize the rule. For example, the words “cap” and “cape”, “can” and “cane” serve as perfect

File Folder Activities for Early Numeracy

My little friend, Maverick, just loves these file folder activities for learning his numbers.  Whenever you can incorporate Play Doh into an activity, it’s sure to be a hit! Whether we’re teaching letters/sounds or numbers, it’s always important to add a hands-on component and Play Doh certainly does the trick.  Our Winter Themed File Folder Activities for Early Numeracy were so much fun during centers that I decided to create a similar activity just for Valentine’s Day. Actually, this activity can be used year round, but it’s perfect for February. There’s a little bit of assembly involved. You’ll have to glue the templates on a file folder and laminate. I used a red file folder, but a manilla file folder

Valentine’s Day FREEBIE!

These Valentine Game Boards are near and dear to my heart. Six years ago I sat down at my computer and created my very, very first activity for this blog. It was on my old PC using Publisher. Since then I’ve switched over to a Mac (thank goodness) and spruced the game boards up a bit, but every February when I pull them out from the activity box, those memories of just starting out with blogging and creating activities for my little friends come flooding back. There are nine game boards which correlate to the Dolch 220 sight word list. They are great for centers as you can differentiate for your students by using the game board at their level. All

Mitten Match for Early Numeracy

These mitten match activities have certainly been a hit during winter themed centers. Whether it’s working with early numeracy concepts, rhyme or letters and sounds, our little kindergarten and first grade friends just love the hands-on component of this activity! Of course you don’t really need to use clothespins to match the mittens, but it adds a little twist on the activity and incorporates a fine motor component as well. The Mitten Match activity contains two activities- one for 10 frame to number match and the other number to word match. The mittens have been color coordinated per activity. The Mitten Match for Early Numeracy can be found in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. The Mitten Match for Rhyme contains 30

7 Syllable Types Resources

It’s always so much fun listening and watching our  young readers figure out those “longer” words.  Many of our little ones are pretty solid decoding one-syllabe words and are now ready to learn strategies for decoding multisyllabic words.  So, really, what is a syllable?  Simply put, a syllable is a unit of pronunciation containing a single vowel sound.  “Syllabication” is the process of analyzing the pattern of vowels and consonants in a word to determine where a word is broken into its syllables. The ability to break a word into syllables helps students decode those longer words as well as helps the student remember spelling patterns.  Understanding the 7 syllable types helps students to become better readers and writers. Winter Themed Math Activities Using Base 10 Blocks

It’s always fun to incorporate a little seasonal spirit into center activities. Many of my first grade friends are now learning place value using base 10 blocks and I thought it’d be a great time to introduce a hands-on winter themed activity. The self-checking feature of this activity makes it perfect for independent centers. When you download the file you’ll receive the template and 50 snowballs with numbers 1-50. The student simply chooses a snowball and builds the number. When done, he/she just turns the snowball over and checks to see if the number of rods and units match. The Representing Numbers Using Base 10 Blocks can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store or on the Make,
