Phonemic Awareness Intervention Kit

Years ago we started using the DIBELS assessment to screen students for reading difficulties and to monitor at-risk students throughout their intervention. We had all this wonderful data, but there seemed to be a gap between the data and then exactly how to use the data to guide instruction and intervention.  So, if a child fell within the “intensive” range on the First Sound Fluency or Phoneme Segmentation Fluency assessments, what activities could/should be used to help remediate that particular skill? In order to make the connection between assessment and intervention, the intervention kits were developed. The intervention kits are intended to be used by either classroom teachers or interventionists to address specific skills during small group instruction. The kits (there are

Valentine’s Day Activities

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and now is the time to pull out all those Valentine activities for centers and small group instruction. Our kiddos just love it when we incorporate holiday themes into the activities. The valentine rhyme matching and beginning sounds activities have certainly been a hit in pre-K and K centers. When you download the valentine activity for rhyme you will receive 48 colorful rhyming heart matches. You can easily differentiate this activity by choosing which and how many hearts to choose. The Valentine Rhyme Matching activity can be found in my Teachers Pay Teachers store or through the Make, Take & Teach website. Our kinders certainly love practicing beginning sounds with the valentine match

Free Valentine Sight Word Game Boards

These Valentine Game Boards are near and dear to my heart. Five years ago I sat down at my computer and created my very, very first activity for this blog. It was on my old PC using Publisher. Since then I’ve switched over to a Mac (thank goodness) and spruced the game boards up a bit, but every February when I pull them out from the activity box, those memories of just starting out with blogging and creating activities for my little friends come flooding back. There are nine game boards which correlate to the Dolch 220 sight word list. They are great for centers as you can differentiate for your students by using the game board at their level.

Penguin CVC Activity

Many of my kindergarten friends are just learning to blend sounds into words. They are becoming solid with those tricky vowel sounds and are now starting to use their sound-symbol correspondence to blend CVC words. This is such an exciting step on the road to reading. For winter themed centers we created these adorable CVC word matching penguins. The self-checking feature of this activity makes it perfect for independent centers. You can easily differentiate this activity by choosing which and how many penguins to use (there are a total of 39 CVC word matches). Once the student matches the picture to the word on the card, he/she simply turns the card over to see if the words match. It’s such a

Tools for Teaching Phoneme Segmentation

The ability to separate the sounds of a word is called “phoneme segmentation”.  It’s a critical skill in both learning to read and write. By six and a half/seven years of age students should be able to tell you the sounds in a word. So, for example, if given the word “cat”, the student should be able to you that the sounds in “cat” are /k/ /a/ /t/.  Understanding that words are made up of separate speech sounds is an important foundational skill.  Phoneme segmentation is considered a “phonemic awareness” skill which falls under the broader category of “phonological” skills. If you’d like to see the developmental sequence of these skills, just download the free handout below. Just click the following

Penguin Math Activities

I have to say I’m just in love with the penguins that my fabulous artist, Kyle, created last year. It’s so much fun using them in our winter themed activities. For my pre-k and kindergarten friends I created these ice fishing scenes that are perfect for centers during the chilly winter months. Of course you could use any manipulative, but why not try using Goldfish crackers for an added twist. There are two different types of templates which allows you to differentiate this activity. For our little ones who have not yet mastered 1-1 correspondence templates with the fish printed have been provided. Winter scenes without the printed fish are provided for those who have mastered this skill. The Ice Fishing

FREE Bathroom Visuals

If you are a preschool, kindergarten or first grade teacher you know that bathroom issues are a constant battle. Actually, our second grade and third grade friends have difficulty remembering bathroom routines as well. When my children were little I often used strategies that I found helpful for my students with autism such as visuals and timers to help establish routines at home. A good strategy is a good strategy and visuals work for all children not just children with ASD or ADHD.  It just seems lately that I’ve seen children dart from the bathroom running right past that sink to wash their hands. A visual reminder may serve as a gentle reminder not to skip this step. Oh– and how about

File Folder Phonics for oi and oy

The File Folder Phonics activities have certainly been a hit for working with specific phonics skills during independent practice.  We find that sorting activities are great for students just learning a phonics skill and then writing those words just helps to cement the concept. Many of my first grade friends are now being introduced to the oy/oi spelling pattern and this file folder activity which contains a word sort, writing practice and then writing the word within context has been super helpful. To create the file folder activity simply print the templates on office paper and adhere to a file folder. Once the templates are in place, laminate the folder. For the word sorting activity, print the words on card

Hockey Themed Sight Word Activities!

I have to admit it, hockey is not my sport. My own kiddos spent hours on the soccer field and on the slopes so there just wasn’t enough time for the skating rink. However, hockey is a very popular sport up in my neck of the woods and I’ve had tons of requests to transfer the soccer themed activities into hockey related activities. So that is my mission this winter. Actually, I updated all the sports themed activities to include game boards which can be mounted on file folders as well as Climb and Slide boards and combined them into sports-themed bundles.  Just for a storage idea, I used these file folder containers purchased at Office Max. All the file

All My Favorite Winter Themed Activities

I have to admit that winter is one of my favorite seasons (followed only by autumn). There are so many outdoor activities up here in the great white north that there’s always something to do.  This winter has been off to a slow start so I’m a little late in bringing out all those winter-themed activities. This weekend I had some organizing to do so I thought I’d start with my all time winter themed favorites and share them on the blog. Hands down the Mitten Match activities are my favorite. My artist, Kyle, created these colorful mitten several years ago and we’ve used them in several activities. The Mitten Match activity for rhyme contains 30 rhyming mitten matches. It’s a popular
