Thinking Differently About Behavior

How do we create an environment where students want to come to school to learn? A place where students feel safe and secure and want to be participating members of a classroom? This is really the goal of every educator- we desparately want our students to have that intrinsic motivation to succeed. We want them to grow into adults who show compassion towards others, who are self-motivated, who can problem solve, who are happy, and strive to be lifelong learners. Rewards and Punishments We need to ask ourselves is if our beliefs about the nature of behavior and our classroom practices facilitate these goals or are they, in fact, harmful (okay, I know that’s a harsh word).  The most common

Getting Ready for Kindergarten- Self Help Skills

One of the best ways parents can prepare their child for kindergarten is to encourage independent skills over the summer months. Actually, many teachers are often more concerned about a child’s ability to take to care of themselves and relate to their friends than how many letters or numbers they know.  Here are a few ideas for helping your child develop self help skills that are particularly helpful in the kindergarten classroom. 1. Cleaning Your Own Personal Space.  Whether picking up toys before coming to large group or putting away markers and crayons at table time, taking care of and cleaning an area is an important self help skill. Ice Cream Cone Contractions

In our everyday speech we use contractions. Contractions are a kind of “short cut” in the way we use words to communicate. Think about it for a bit. If you were going to tell a friend that you aren’t going to lunch, are you likely to say, “I am not going to lunch” or “I’m not going to lunch”? Because we use these words so often in our speech, it’s important that we teach students how to use the words in writing. Teaching contractions can be fun and there are tons of great activities to use to support this concept. When introducing the idea of contractions, it’s helpful to begin by defining the word “contract”. “Contract” means to get smaller

Make, Take & Teach Catalog

This summer it’s my goal to get organized and creating this catalog was right on top of my to-do list. My computer files are an absolute mess and it’s difficult to find an activity, poster or handout when I need it. I organized the activities mainly by content- Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, et cetera. Just click the hyperlink and you’ll be taken right to that activity.  All FREEBIES are organized by DIY Activities, Cue Cards, Direct Teaching Activities, Handouts, Posters and Word Lists. If you’d like a copy of the
