D.I.Y. Name Puzzles

These name puzzles are certainly a hit! There’s no better way to practice name and letter recognition than to use your child’s picture and create their very own puzzle. Making the puzzle is super easy. All you’ll need are large craft sticks (one for each letter or your child’s name), a picture of your child printed on office paper, Mod Podge, a brush for application, tape, Exacto knife or razor, and a black Sharpie marker. The puzzles work best for children with 4 or more letters in their name.  For each letter line up a large craft stick and then tape the craft sticks together. When printing your child’s picture be sure to size it so fits the width of

Fly Swat Activities

The Fly Swat activity is one of my all time favorite activities. It’s amazing how something as simple as words printed on flies and a fly swatter purchased at a dollar store can keep even the most reluctant students practicing words for hours! To assemble this activity simply print the files, laminate (optional) and cut the flies along the dotted line. Place a little velcro dot on each fly and then a velcro strip on the fly swatter and you’re all set. Have your students take turns “swatting” the flies and reading the words on the files that stick to the swatter. I know- so simple, but they absolutely LOVE this hands-on activity. To download the flies for the Dolch

Robin’s Nest Activities for Beginning Sounds and Word Families

Well, it’s certainly been a long, hard winter. It’s hard to believe that just two days ago (that would be April 9th) it was actually snowing outside. Yikes! Today I was able to take a long bike ride around the lake as the temperature peaked at 54 degrees. Okay, I know my friends living in the southern states and in other countries may think that’s a bit crazy, but it’s par for the course for living in Northern Michigan.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Listening to the birds chirping on my bike ride was quite a treat. Actually, the whole bike ride was a nature’s choir! There were tons of frogs and other creatures also taking advantage of the

Fun and Simple Pirate Hats

Let’s welcome back, Kyle, as our guest on the Make, Take & Teach blog! This week’s theme at our preschool was Pirates with Dads. As a room mom, I was nominated to set up a Photo Booth and take pictures of the Dads and little pirates together. We love pirates at our house and have a few costume items that fit 3-5yr olds. I didn’t want to go out an spend a ton of money on a simple prop that would be used for such a short stint. I decided to put a simple spin on the old newspaper hat. I bought large black paper from the dollar store, a few colors of curling ribbon, and drew my own skull
