Cookie Sheet Activities First Grade Bundle!

Phew!  What a summer project.  It took about a month, but I was able to combine several of the cookie sheet activities into bundles.  Volumes 1 (ABC Order, Rhyme, and Making Words), 2 (Early Numeracy) and 4 (Beginning Sounds) comprise the Pre K- Kindergarten Cookie Sheet Bundle.  Those volumes are ideal for preschool and kindergarten literacy centers (and even beginning first). Now just for my first grade friends.  The First Grade Cookie Sheet Activities Bundle includes Volume 3 (sight words), 5 (Blends and Digraphs) and 6 (Word Families).  Below are the activities contained within the First Grade bundle.  Volume 3 Cookie Sheet Activities Volume 3 contains 3 sight word activities designed to be used during small group instruction or

D.I.Y. Tactile Letters

It’s somewhat of a mixed blessing living in a small town.  I love where I live, but outside of Walmart and Meijer, there really isn’t much terms of shopping.  It’s always a treat, though, when I get to travel to a “big city” about an hour from my home and visit the Michael’s Craft Store.  I’m afraid if we had a Michael’s I’d be in that store everyday!  Well on a recent shopping trip, I picked up these felt letters.  I though they’d be perfect for making tactile letters. I found a version of this idea on Pinterest a few weeks ago.  I’d love to give the blogger credit, but when I clicked the link, the blog was no longer

Cookie Sheet Activities Pre K- Kindergarten Bundle!

Well, over the past year and a half I’ve been adding to the cookie sheet activities series.  Right now there are 6 volumes and I have several more in process.  I’ve received numerous requests to bundle the activities, so I’m taking advantage of the summer months to do just that.  All the volumes contain a large amount of graphics so bundling all 6 was just not possible.  What I decided to do was to create a bundle of three volumes specifically for Pre K- kindergarten and then one for first grade.  Of course, all the volumes are available individually, but if you’d like to purchase the Cookie Sheet Activities Pre K- Kindergarten Bundle, you’ll receive the following activities.  Cookie Sheet

Teaching Phoneme Segmentation

Phonemic awareness is one of my favorite topics relating to literacy instruction.  Studies of reading development have demonstrated that the acquisition of phonemic awareness is highly predictive of success in learning to read.  It’s so important that our beginning readers have an understanding that spoken words are made of up individual speech sounds so that phonics instruction makes sense.  Teaching phonemic awareness skills can be actually quite fun.  There are tons of activities that you can use during your whole and small group instruction.  Here are a few: There are several skills which fall under the category of phonemic awareness and phonemic awareness awareness falls under a broader category known as phonological awareness.   I’ve created this little video to

D.I.Y. Letter Tiles and a Freebie!

I just love it when you can find a way cheaper way of creating educational items.  Sometimes ordering from a catalog can be so expensive.  Word building activities are very important for our kindergarten and first grade kiddos as they learn that letters can be put together to make words.  It’s so much more effective when each student can have their own set.  Creating your own letter tiles is quite easy.  All you need is a fine point black Sharpie marker and plastic tiles.  I like to buy the plastic tiles in bulk as I use them for several other activities. It’s super easy to make your letter tiles.  Simply write the letters on the tiles with your Sharpie marker.

Sight Word Games for our Little Baseball Fans

Oh…it’s summertime!  It’s pretty important to keep our little ones engaged and there’s no better way to do that than to use games and activities.  Here’s a fun little baseball-themed activity for practicing the Dolch 220 sight words.  I love this game because it’s fast-paced and offers tons of opportunities for practice.  To assemble this game, simply print the baseballs single-sided to double-sided and cut them out.  Players take turns choosing baseballs and reading the words.  Pick a “Home Run!” ball and the player can pick a few more balls, but choose the “You’re Out!” ball, and all the balls must be put back into the pile.   Super easy to assemble and the kids absoulutely love it. The Home Run! for the Dolch 220 sight words can be downloaded from my TpT

Strategies for Working with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Will you be welcoming a student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) into your classroom this fall?  If this is your first experience having a child with ASD in your classroom you may be a tad nervous (well, likely more that just a tad).  You may be wondering how in the world are you going to meet the needs of this one child while balancing the needs of the other children in your classroom.  How will you handle the behaviors?  What do the parents expect?  Children with ASD often come with them a barrage of service providers such as Speech/Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Behavioral Consultants and sometimes a 1:1 para-professional– how are we all going to be working together?  You may
