Ready for Some Football?

Ready for some football?  The big game is quickly approaching–unfortunately the Lions won’t be playing so I’m not sure who I’ll be cheering for.  Anyway, Super Bowl Sunday is really fun at our house.  We typically gather with our close friends and make a night of it.  I’m thinking maybe the Ravens? To celebrate the big game, Kyle and I quickly whipped up a fun sight word activity.  All you’ll need to do is print the footballs  single-sided to double-sided (I usually print them on cardstock), cut them out and you’ll have a ready-made game!  This activity is easily differentiated as you choose how many and which sight word footballs to use.  To play the game, students take turns choosing footballs and reading the

Four In A Row Winter Themed Freebie

These cute little 4-In-A-Row templates have just been sitting in my computer files just waiting to be made into an activity.  Last month I used the templates to create activities for sight words, but I know many of our kinders are now working on decoding CVC words and I wanted to make an activity specifically for them.  Of course, there are first graders who could use extra practice with this skill, too. Click the following link to download this freebie! Winter 4 In A Row CVC Words My first grade friends are now working on decoding CCVC/CVCC words.  So I whipped up this 4-In-A-Row game board. My Favorite Resources for Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities

We are often asked by parents if we think their child has dyslexia when the child is having difficulty learning to read.  This question certainly is raised if the child is reversing letters or numbers in writing.   There seems to be a certain mystic around the term “dyslexia”.  “Dyslexia” simply means “difficutly with words” as dys means “difficult” and lexia, “words”.   The term “dyslexia” is used mostly used within the medical profession when describing children who are struggling with reading.   In the school setting, when a child’s reading difficulty is so severe that he or she requires special education, the child is often labeled with a “Specific Learning Disability” (SLD).   We know that dyslexia occur on continuum.  The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) reports that perhaps

One of My Favorite Quotes for Teachers

One of my teacher friends had this quote hanging above her computer.  Every Monday when I visited her classroom I would make it a point read the quote.  It  just set the tone for my week and was a gentle reminder of the power we have as teachers in the lives of children.   Teaching skills, of course, is an important part of job, but establishing relationships and creating an atmosphere where all children feel valued is crucial.   Sometimes we have difficult children in our classrooms who can absolutely drive us crazy .  Especially with those children, it is very important that check ourselves and be sure that we are still treating those children with compassion and understanding. Strategies for Improving Handwriting

There is so much you can learn about a student’s phonics skills just from looking at writing samples.   One of the big “ah-ha” moments from my Phonics First training (Orton-Gillingham based program) was when the trainer said that a student has not fully mastered a phonics rule until you see him/her use it in writing.  Of course, that makes sense.  Sometimes you just need someone to point out the obvious.  Since that time, I’ve made it a point to really take some time to analyze writing samples.  One of the problems I’m having with some students is actually trying to read what they are writing.  This issue has led to numerous conversations with our Occupational Therapists regarding handwriting.  Admittedly, it

Mitten Match Activities

Oh my, the snow is flying up here in Northern Michigan!  Winter is alway a fun time of the year and it’s a great time to add a little seasonal spirit into your center activities.  These mitten match activities may just do the trick. Assembling the activities is pretty easy.  You’ll want to print the mitten on cardstock so that they are durable and then laminate. Just grab a few clothespins and your activity is all set.  This is so not necessary, but I decided to “cutesie” up the clothespins by attaching little snowballs on the ends.  I picked up this foam packet at Micheal’s Craft Store.  There’s a variety of shapes to use for different activities. You can find

Holiday Vowel Sorting Activity with a Twist

I was strollin’ through the Christmas section at my local Walmart and found these holiday stakes.  They really are meant to placed in the ground around the house, but they are oh so cute and I just couldn’t resist using them for an activity.   We have just a few little first graders who still need practice with the short vowel sounds so I thought this would be a perfect holiday activity for use in a literacy center. To make this activity, first print and cut out the 25 short vowel pictures I put on snowballs.  You’ll want to be sure to print the pics on cardstock so that they are durable. 10 Activities for Teaching and Practicing Letters and Sounds

So it’s late November and we have just a few first graders who have not yet mastered their letters and sounds.  For these little firsties, we needed to readjust their intervention plan and bump it up a knotch in terms of intensity.  It’s always difficult to find time in a jam-packed school day, but mastering letters and sounds is really important and must take priority right now.  One way to add intervention time is to teach volunteers and/or the child’s parent in how to teach and practice letters and sounds.   Having the right activities available and directions for correctly using the activities is really important.  I’ve collected 10 of my most favorite activities for teaching letters and sounds and gathered them
