Phoneme Grapheme Posters and Resources!

Phoneme Grapheme Posters and Resources! Shortly after students learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet, we introduce the concept that many vowels and consonant sounds can be spelled in different ways. Let’s take the /f/ sound for example. Most of the time the /f/ sound is spelled with “f” as in the words “fan”, “fish” and “fix”. Sometimes the /f/ sound is spelled “ff” as in the words “cuff” and “off”; sometimes “gh” as in “tough” and sometimes “ph” as in “phone”. This can be pretty overwhelming for our young readers and writers. How do students know when to use which spelling for the sounds in the words they wish to write? Phoneme Mapping Let’s take the words “pin”

Teaching the -k -ck Spelling Rule

Teaching k/ck spelling rule can be fun When teaching k/ck spelling rule use these activities to make it fun and easy! The spelling rule for the final /k/ sound is as follows: When the /k/ sound is at the end of a word it can be spelled with either the letter “k”  or the letters “ck”. When the final /k/ sound is preceded by a vowel team or a diphthong (e.g. ou) it is spelled with a “k”. For example, the words “break”, “beak”, “seek” and “soak” all have a long vowel sound before the final /k/ sound and therefore is /k/ is spelled “k”. Teaching Hard and Soft C & G

Teaching Hard and Soft Sounds of C and G Shortly after students learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet we teach them that the vowels and several consonants actually have two sounds. The consonants “c” and “g” are two of the letters that make different sounds depending on the letters that follow them in the word. Learning and teaching hard and soft sounds of “c” and “g” can be tricky, but these activities are sure to be a hit! Soft and Hard G The most common sound for the “g” is the “hard” sound as in the word “goat”.  However, if the “g” is followed by an i, e or y it makes the “soft” /j/ sound as in

Teaching the Doubling Spelling Rule

Teaching the doubling spelling rule If you’d like this free doubling spelling rule poster, just click the following link: Doubling Rule Poster Teaching the doubling spelling rule can be fun! It is one of the first rules we teach our young readers and writers. It’s often helpful to provide examples where this rule applies and where this rule does not apply. This file folder activity has your students decide if the word meets (or doesn’t meet) those criteria and if the doubling spelling rule would apply to the word. This file folder activity

“Sweet” Activities for Teaching Contractions

“Sweet” Activities for Teaching Contractions In our everyday speech, we use contractions.  Contractions are a kind of “short cut” in the way we use words to communicate.  Think about it for a bit.  If you were going to tell a friend that you aren’t going to lunch, are you likely to say, “I am not going to lunch” or “I’m not going to lunch”?  Because we use these words so often in our speech, it’s important that we teach students how to use the words in writing.  Teaching contractions can be fun and there are tons of great activities to use to support this concept. When introducing the idea of contractions, it’s helpful to begin by defining the word “contract”.  “Contract”
