Teaching the Sounds of -ed – A Basketball Activity!

Teaching the Sounds of -ed Teaching the sounds of -ed at the end of the word indicates that something has happened in the past. The -ed ending is actually what we call a “morpheme” –  a unit of meaning. This concept can be a little tricky for our young readers as the -ed ending on a word has three sounds. When the -ed ending comes after the letter “t” or “d” it makes the /ed/ sound like in the words “melted”, “rented” and “printed”. If the word ends with the following sounds, the -ed ending will make the /t/ sound: p, k, s, f, th, ch, sh or x (e.g. jumped, fished). The /d/ sound for -ed is used for

Bunny Addition Game, Addition Facts to 10

Bunny Addition Game The Penguin Addition activity was such a hit that I thought I’d create a Bunny Addition Game for a spring-themed activity along the same line. Goldfish crackers worked great as the manipulatives for the penguins, but I just couldn’t find just the right manipulative for this activity until I stopped in at our local Walmart.  This package of foam stickers had just what I was looking for! Of course, what I really wanted was only those small foam eggs, but the spring-themed animals were so cute…I think I’ll be able to put them to good use. Of course you could use jelly beans as the manipulative, but I was afraid things could get a little sticky 🙂

Teaching Those Tricky Short Vowels

Teaching Short Vowels Those short vowel sounds can really trip up our young readers. Several of the vowels sound so similar it’s no wonder that they can be so tricky. Discrimination activities, such as this vowel sticks activity, can help our kiddos hear the differences between the sounds. When teaching short vowels this activity can be easily differentiated as you can choose which and how many vowels to use during instruction. You may want to start with only two vowels for those students who are really having a difficult time with the sounds and then add more vowels as they become more proficient with this skill.  You can then increase the difficulty of this task by providing CVC words (e.g.

Teaching Consonant+le A Basketball Themed Activity

Teaching Consonant+le It’s always so much fun listening and watching our young readers figure out those “longer” words. Many of our little ones are pretty solid decoding one-syllable words and are now ready to learn strategies for decoding multisyllabic words. So, really, what is a syllable? Simply put, a syllable is a unit of pronunciation containing a single vowel sound. “Syllabication” is the process of analyzing the pattern of vowels and consonants in a word to determine where a word is broken into its syllables. The ability to break a word into syllables helps students decode those longer words as well as helps the student remember spelling patterns. Understanding the 7 Syllable Types Understanding the 7 syllable types helps students
