During the chilly months of December and January it’s always fun to incorporate winter themed math activities. I especially love the two base ten winter themed math activities geared for teaching base. Those activities are especially helpful for our first grade students. But I just couldn’t forget our pre-k and kindergarten friends. Just for them, I created these ice fishing scenes that are perfect for math centers. Of course you could use any manipulative, but why not try using Goldfish crackers for an added twist. There are two different types of templates which allows you to differentiate this activity. For our little ones who have not yet mastered 1-1 correspondence templates with the fish printed have been provided. Winter scenes without the printed fish are provided for those who have mastered this skill.
The Ice Fishing Penguin activity can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teacher store or through the Make, Take & Teach website.
Many of our first grade friends are learning to represent numbers using base ten blocks. Using base ten blocks helps our students visualize the the base ten system of numbers. They are a physical representation of the abstract concept of numbers and place value. Of course we should always begin the actual physical base ten blocks to teach numbers initially. For the Representing Numbers Using Base Ten Blocks activity you will need the actual base ten cubes. Just click the following link if you don’t already have them in your math toolbox: Base Ten Starter Set.
The Representing Numbers Using Base 10 Blocks can also be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store.
The next step is using the picture representation of the blocks. The Penguin Match Base Ten activity is perfect for your independent centers as it has a self checking feature!
