Basketball Themed Sight Word Games

Go Green! Go White! If you recognize that chant you’re probably guessing that I’m a Michigan State fan. I just love college sports and basketball is one of my favorites. This basketball themed sight word games and activities bundle contains several hands-on activities for learning and practicing sight words (I use the Dolch 220 sight words).

Storing Classroom Activities

Just for a storage idea, I used these file folder containers purchased at Office Max. All the file folder game boards, as well as the other activities, store perfectly.

Kyle (my artist) created these adorable game board templates. There’s a little bit of work in terms of gluing the templates onto the file folders, but once laminated, the game boards will last for years and years.

Basketball Sight Word Bundle

In the basketball-themed sight word bundle, there are 9 game boards containing words from the Dolch sight word list. I purchased 3″ plastic spinners in bulk online for my game boards, but if you choose, you could easily use a paperclip and a pencil as the spinner.

Mounted on a file folder and laminated, the basketball-themed Climb & Slide game boards will also last for years to come. These boards also contain words from the Dolch sight word list. Contained in this bundle are 3 game boards. All you’ll need to play this game are game pawns and a die.

Four-In-A-Row & Race To The Top

The Four-In-A-Row Game and the Race the Top Game are true favorites for center activities. Each activity contains 9 colorful game boards. You can easily differentiate this activity by choosing which game boards the students use. For example, a student just learning sight words can use the first Race to the Top game board and another student may use the fifth. Both students will be engaged in the same game!

Swish Sight Word Game

There is nothing fancy about the Swish! activity, but it’s a guarantee that this activity will be a favorite. I love activities that are fast-paced and offer tons of opportunities for practice. This game fits perfectly.
Simply print the basketballs single-sided to double-sided.
Then cut out the balls and you’re ready to go.
First, choose which and how many words to use and then lay the balls word side down on the table.

The students take turns choosing balls and reading the words. If the “Swish!” ball is chosen, the student can pick a few more balls; if the “Penalty” is chosen all the balls must be put back in the pile. The player with the most balls at the end of the time wins the game. Super simple, yet very engaging.
