Flipping Eggs!

The Flipping Pancakes for sight words activity was such a hit I thought I’d shake it up a bit and create an activity for flipping eggs!  It’s amazing to me how something so simple can keep the kiddos engaged while practicing an otherwise – maybe not so fun- skill.  This activity is great for either your classroom literacy centers or as an activity for small group instruction.  Grab a spatula at the dollar store,  print the eggs, laminate (optional), cut them out and you’re ready to go!  Having a pan and plate available isn’t really necessary, but it just adds a little novelty.  The flipping eggs activity is available for the alphabet, consonant-vowel-consonant words and the Dolch 220 sight words.

7 Syllable Types Classroom Posters

It’s always so much fun listening and watching our  young readers figure out those “longer” words.  Many of our little ones are pretty solid decoding one-syllabe words and are now ready to learn strategies for decoding multisyllabic words.  So, really, what is a syllable?  Simply put, a syllable is a unit of pronunciation containing a single vowel sound.  “Syllabication” is the process of analyzing the pattern of vowels and consonants in a word to determine where a word is broken into its syllables. The ability to break a word into syllables helps students decode those longer words as well as helps the student remember spelling patterns.  Understanding the 7 syllable types helps students to become better readers and writers. Winter Themed Activities for Teaching R-Controlled Vowels

Many of my first grade friends are now moving onto more advanced phonics concepts.  They can blend CVC words, know blend and digraphs, and are now ready to move onto working with r-controlled vowels.  How exciting! I just love first grade.  Most enter first grade knowing their letters and sounds and then 9 short months later, leave with chapter books in their hands.  It’s really quite amazing.  To address r-controlled vowels, I made a few little activities which can be used in your centers or for small group instruction.  The first activity is the sorting penguins activity.  Students read the word on the penguins and then place the penguin on the correct corresponding arctic scene.  There are 60 colorful penguins!

Fun with Beginning Sounds

I created the Beginning Sounds activity specifically for independent practice in literacy centers.  There are three different ways that you can use the templates.  The first way (I’ll admit, it’s my favorite) is to laminate the templates and place velcro dots on the circles and letters.  The students match the letters to the beginning sound of the word.  I placed a long strip of velcro on the back of each board and placed the letters specifically for that template on the back.  This makes it easy to quickly grab the template you wish the student to use and the letters are readily available. The second way that you can use the templates is by laminating them and having your student

Compound Word Cupcakes

I’ve been wanting to make this activity for quite some time.  Kyle (fabulous artist) created these super cute cupcakes just for this activity designed for learning compound words.   This activity contains 48 compound word cupcakes which are ideal for use either within your literacy centers or for small group instruction.  Your students simply match the cupcake halves to create words.  A recording sheet is included so that they can write their words. This activity is easily differentiated as you can choose which and how many cupcakes to use.   The Cupcake Matching Compound Words is available through my Teachers Pay Teachers online store or through the Make, Take & Teach website.

Dry Erase Pockets- All About Vowels!

I’ve been absolutely lovin’ those dry erase pockets I picked up at Walmart during their back to school sale.  My goodness, they were only a little over a $1.oo each!  My mind is literally spinning with activities to create to use with them.  The kids really like this twist on what would normally be a black and white worksheet.  The pockets are particularly helpful during small group instruction when working on targeted phonics skills. I know so many of my first grade friends are working on short vowel sounds so creating a dry erase pocket activity for short vowels seemed to be a logical fit.  For each vowel, there is a word family page where the student is to write

Even MORE Pocket Chart Pictures!

I’m really loving my tabletop pocket chart that I picked up at Walmart. It’s perfect for small group instruction. Unfortunately, you can only find these during the months of July and August when school supplies are available- bummer. After searching the web, I was able to find a similar tabletop pocket chart. It’s a bit more expensive than my Walmart find, but it will work just as well.  If you weren’t able to grab one at Walmart this year, you might want to check out this option: So, I’ve been creating activities for my pocket chart.  I’m slowly, but surely working my way up the phonics ladder.  So far we have Pocket Chart Pictures for Early Literacy and Pocket Chart
