Flipping Eggs!

The Flipping Pancakes for sight words activity was such a hit I thought I’d shake it up a bit and create an activity for flipping eggs!  It’s amazing to me how something so simple can keep the kiddos engaged while practicing an otherwise – maybe not so fun- skill.  This activity is great for either your classroom literacy centers or as an activity for small group instruction.  Grab a spatula at the dollar store,  print the eggs, laminate (optional), cut them out and you’re ready to go!  Having a pan and plate available isn’t really necessary, but it just adds a little novelty.  The flipping eggs activity is available for the alphabet, consonant-vowel-consonant words and the Dolch 220 sight words.

Flipping Pancakes!

It’s important to add a little variety into our small group instruction and into our literacy center activities.  Sometimes just adding a little twist to a drill and practice activity can do the trick.  The Flipping Pancakes activity is super easy to make and guaranteed to keep our students engaged.  Simply print the pancakes (laminate if desired) and then cut them out.  Have your students read the words and then flip the pancake with a spatula.  This activity is super simple, but the kids just absolutely love it! Storing your activities can sometimes be a bit challenging.  I typically store mine in baggies, but plastic storage containers will work great too! The Make, Take & Teach Flipping Pancakes activity is

Santa’s Reindeer

Kyle (fabulous artist) made this adorable reindeer clip art just so I can create a few Christmas-themed activities.   Many of our kindergarteners, first graders and second graders are working on various list of the Dolch 220 sight words, so I thought it’d be fun to make an activity just for sight word practice.  You can easily differentiate this activity by choosing which and how many sight word reindeer to use.  Playing the game is quite simple and that’s why it’s ideal for an independent center.  Students take turns choosing a reindeer and reading the word.  The first student to choose a reindeer with “coal” must put all their reindeer back in the pile and play resumes.  The student with

Spider Web Game

Do you have those very special go-to activities?  The spider web game is definitely one of mine.  I started my career as a Speech and Language Pathologist many years ago and the spider web game was one of the first games I made.  My very dear friend and mentor, Jill, introduced me to this game as she was using it with her students working on specific sounds.  I quickly made one of my own for my therapy sessions.  This game was so much fun the kiddos started asking to play it in September and kept wanting to play it through Thanksgiving.  This activity is so versatile, I just adapted it for use with sight words. To create your own game,

Popcorn Words

The Dolch sight word list is a list of 220 words that make up between 50-70% of the words we encounter in text.  Most of these words are “service words” that must be quickly recognized in order to read fluently.  Many of the words cannot be sounded out and they need to be learned by “sight”.  Because the words must be identified quickly (just like a popcorn kernel pops quickly) many teachers tell their students that these words are “popcorn words”.  The words just need to “pop”.  Our little kindergarteners and first graders love this concept and you can have tons of fun using the popcorn analogy to teach sight words.  When you download the Dolch 220 Popcorn Words file,

Multi-Sensory Activity for Teaching Letters and Sight Words

I love using plastic screens for introducing and practicing letters and sight words.  Plastic screens can be found in any craft store (Michaels or JoAnn Fabrics) or in the craft section of most department stores.  When I use the screens for teaching letters, I typically cut one sheet into quarters and then for the sight words, I’ll cut 3 long strips.  You can use ready-made templates of letters or sight words or you can simply write the letters/words on paper yourself.  First have your students place the paper on top of the screen and, with a crayon, trace the letter or letters of the sight word.  When they remove the paper, the letter/word will be “bumpy” on the paper.  If

Sight Word Games for our Little Baseball Fans

Oh…it’s summertime!  It’s pretty important to keep our little ones engaged and there’s no better way to do that than to use games and activities.  Here’s a fun little baseball-themed activity for practicing the Dolch 220 sight words.  I love this game because it’s fast-paced and offers tons of opportunities for practice.  To assemble this game, simply print the baseballs single-sided to double-sided and cut them out.  Players take turns choosing baseballs and reading the words.  Pick a “Home Run!” ball and the player can pick a few more balls, but choose the “You’re Out!” ball, and all the balls must be put back into the pile.   Super easy to assemble and the kids absoulutely love it. The Home Run! for the Dolch 220 sight words can be downloaded from my TpT

Let’s Play Some Basketball!

The Final Four March Madness Basketball Tournament started today.  I really love college basketball!  With my son attending Michigan State University, we’ve been lucky enough to travel to East Lansing to see a few games.   On top of that, we are traveling again to MSU this weekend to watch our high school basketball team compete in the class B semi-finals.  How exciting!!  This is the first time in 40 years that our high school team has made it this far in the play-offs.  Wishing them all the luck in the world.  Well, in honor of the Final 4, I whipped up a few activities for our little basketball fans.
