Consonant Blends and Digraphs Game Boards

Consonant blends and digraphs game boards make learning engaging! After students are proficient with the letters and sounds of the alphabet we then introduce the phonics skills of consonant blends and consonant digraphs. Consonant blends are groups of two or three consonants in words that makes a distinct consonant sound, such as “bl” or “st.” A consonant digraph are two (or three) letters that come together to make one sound, such as “sh” or “th”. The difference between blends and digraphs is that with blends you can hear each letter sound. Consonant digraphs make one different sound.

When introducing digraphs we begin with common consonant digraphs such as “sh”, “ch”, “th” and “wh”. Sometimes we refer to this group of digraphs as the “h brothers”. When introducing the common consonant digraphs it is often helpful to use cue cards to assist with the correct production of the sound.

Games and activities are often helpful when practicing words containing common consonant blends and digraphs. A game board for each digraph is provided as well as a game board containing words with both the “sh” and “ch” digraphs.
