A few years ago I developed the very first cookie sheet activities for my Pre K and Kindergarten friends. Since that time I’ve been slowly moving up the phonics ladder. I just can’t believe that we now have bundles available through vowel teams! Of course each skill is available separately, but I’ve bundled the 9 individual volumes into 3 big bundles by grade level. The Cookie Sheet Activities for Pre K- Kindergarten includes early literacy (rhyme), early numeracy, and beginning sounds/short vowels. The Cookie Sheet Activities for First Grade Set 1 includes sight words, blends/digraphs, and word families. Now for Cookie Sheet First Grade Set 2! This bundle includes hands-on activities for practicing and learning the skills of magic e, r-controlled vowels and vowel teams.
Shortly after students learn letters/sounds and blends/digraphs they are introduced to the concept of magic e. The magic e rule basically applies when an “e” is close behind another vowel (with no more than one letter in between) the first vowel usually says its name (long vowel sound) and the “e” is usually silent. There are tons of fun ways to introduce and teach this concept. When introducing the concept, sorting activities are helpful. Having students identify words in which the rule applies and does not apply is an first important step. This bundle includes a sorting template and 27 discrimination pictures with and without the word provided.
Word building activities are also a great way to reinforce a particular phonics skill. When you download this bundle you will receive 21 word building templates. 12 of the templates include the long vowel sound only and 9 templates are provided with a mixture of long and short vowel sounds so the students will need to identify the words in which the rule applies.
Cookie Sheet Volume 8 addresses the phonics skill of r-controlled vowels. Again, sorting activities are a great way to introduce a phonics concept. Those vowel sounds can be pretty tricky so sorting activities help students to hear the differences between the sounds. There are 11 differentiated sorting templates, 36 large colorful pictures and 34 small pictures for sorting. As with the magic e volume, a word building activity is included. There are 6 templates for building words containing r-controlled vowels. Nothing beats hands-on activities for reinforcing skills.
Now for the very last cookie sheet activities volume. Volume 9 is devoted to the concept of vowel teams. This volume contains sorting and word building activities for the following common vowel teams: ea, ai, oa, and ee.
Storing the pictures and templates can be a bit challenging. I purchased these 15L x 11 1/2W x 3 1/4H Sterilite containers at Walmart and they work perfectly! Your templates are safe and pictures and letter magnets can be placed in baggies. I’ve included the labels for the baggies and the outside of the containers in this download just in case you’d store the activities in the same way.
Did I mention that they stack so nicely!
Although the cookie sheet activities can be used during small group instruction, they are especially helpful for independent practice within your literacy centers.
