Oh my goodness have things changed with the this pandemic. Most of the country, if not fully offering distance learning, is providing at least some form at this point. This has forced us to adjust, adapt and think differently on how to teach specific skills over a new platform. Teaching a skill which really requires manipulatives, especially during the initial stages, has been particularly challenging. When we introduce the skill of phoneme segmentation we use chips or blocks and have students move the items for each sound in the word. This hands on component is critical for most children. In the absence of face to face instruction, we’ve had to come up with a different option.
If you haven’t yet stumbled upon Boom task cards, you’ll want to check them out for sure. In a gist, Boom cards are digital, interactive task cards. The best part?- well, they are self-checking! That means once the student “submits” the answer, he/she is provided with instant feedback as to whether the answer is correct or incorrect. The program also tracks student progress data! Boom Cards can be assigned through Google Classroom, SeeSaw, and other platforms! If you haven’t yet jumped on the Boom bandwagon, now is the time! You just have to check them out.
I created 5 sets of digital task cards to support the skill of phoneme segmentation. Each set contains 10 digital task cards and increase in difficulty as you move from set to set. For example, set 1 contains 2-3 phoneme words and set 5 contains 3, 4 and 5 phoneme words.
