I am super excited to have completed the File Folder Activities for Sight Words! I’ve had so much positive feedback from teachers and parents who have been using the File Folder Phonics- Alphabet bundle that I’ve been working like mad to complete the sight word companion. This bundle contains 4 interactive activities for teaching and practicing sight words. The first activity is building the word with Play Doh. The kiddos absolutely love working with dough!
The second activity is building the word with either magnetic letters or letter tiles. You have a choice to make with this. You can either use magnetic letters- that’s fine- they work great.
You could also opt for using letter tiles. The great thing about using the tiles is that you can differentiate the activity by placing only the tiles in a baggie and adhere the baggie to the folder using a brass clasp. That way when a file folder is used, all the materials are right there. Using this option will require a bit more assembly and you’ll need about 700 counting tiles, but having all the materials right there– well, it’s perfect. Here’s a link to the counting tiles: Counting Tiles.
It’s important that students have an opportunity to practice the word in writing. Students first trace the word and then write the word without this support.
Flip the file folder over and have your students practice reading the word in text. Picture support is added for most file folder activities when appropriate.
Learning sight words can be fun. Although drill and practice activities are a part of sight word instruction, introducing words using a multi-sensory approach is the best bet to ensure children acquire these words.
When you download this file you will receive the templates for creating the first 50 sight words from the Dolch 220 sight word list. Simply print the templates and glue them on file folders. Laminate the file folders and you’ll have a multi-sensory activity that can be used over and over again!
