Plurals are simply a grammatical marker that tells the listener or reader that there is more than one of something (like frogs or bugs). Plural nouns are commonly found in our beginning texts so it’s important that our young students learn to decode and correctly write words containing plural forms. For our beginning readers and writers we start with teaching three spelling rules (add -s, add -es, and then -ies). We then introduce adding of -ves when a word end in “f” or “fe”. Feel free to download the FREE plurals poster for use in your classroom.
These file folder activities are ideal for introducing and practicing the concept of plurals. Once laminated, you can use the file folders again and again!
Rule 1: Add -s to most nouns to make them plural
The first two file folder activities introduce the first rule or plurals: add -s to most nouns to make them plural. With the first plural Add -s file folder activity, the students are provided with words (some plural and some singular) and then asked to sort the words. There are two sets of words in this file folder activity.
The second file folder activity for rule 1, students use a dry erase marker to write the word adding (or not adding) the -s to make the word plural. Simply wipe the file folder clean once done and this activity can be used again!
Rule 2: Add -es to nouns that end in ch, sh, s, x or z
After teaching the first rule of plurals, we then teach when to use the -es spelling. This first activity involves sorting plural nouns ending in -s or -es.
The second file folder activity for rule 2 is one of my favorites as I feel it’s important for students to transfer phonics skills into writing. With this file folder activity the student first must indicate if the noun ends in ch, sh, s, z or x and then writes the word using the correct spelling.
Rule 3: If the noun ends in -y with a consonant before the y, change the y to i and add -es.
This file folder activity addresses when to add -ies to indicate a plural form. Again, this activity is especially helpful as it requires a writing component.
The last plural file folder activity has the student differentiate between the three spelling rules. There are two sets of words for this activity so that it can be used multiple times.
