Shortly after learning the letters and sounds of the alphabet, students learn that the vowel sounds have both a long and short sound. One way to make the vowel say its name (long vowel) is to have the “magic e” at the end of the word. An “e” at the end of a short word jumps over the consonant and changes the short vowel sound to a long vowel sound. We often teach that the “e” has magical powers at the end of a word. Students will need to learn phonics rules such as the magic e to become proficient readers and writers. They will need to be directly taught the rules and then offered opportunities to practice reading and writing words containing the rule.
The intervention kits are intended to be used by either classroom teachers or interventionists to address specific skills during small group instruction. The kits (there are 5 different kits) contain 15-16 hands-on activities for supporting an area of literacy. The Magic e Kit was created specifically for my first and second grade friends just learning the magic e rule. This kit contains 16 activities designed to directly teach the rule, practice applying the rule to words and reading words with the magic e in sentences. All the activities fit into a Sterilite container. When you order the kit you will receive all the materials needed to assemble the activities. This includes the activities printed in color on 90 lb card stock, all the hard goods (e.g. magic e wands, blocks, game board pieces, craft sticks, letter tiles, dry erase boards/markers) and the Sterilite container. You will also receive step-by-step directions for assembling the activities.
The magic e kit contains a 13 page teaching manual. Step-by-step directions for each activity are provided.
Now for the fun stuff! Here are activities contained within the kit. There are 2 activities designed to systematically and explicitly teach the magic e rule. For the teaching cards activity the students are provided the magic e wand and they “magically” change the vowel to say its long sound when the magic e appears at the end of the word. Using the wand, the students really begin to understand the role of the magic e at the end of the word. The manual contains the exact wording the teacher uses when introducing the rule using the cards and the wand. Three dry erase boards and markers are provided for the second activity which contains a writing to dictation component. The word lists contained in the back of your manual are pretty helpful when using words with magic e!
There are four activities designed to discriminate words containing the magic e and their word pairs without the magic e (e.g. pin/pine, cub/cube, can/cane). It’s important for students to practice with these word pairs as they can directly see how the rule is applied to words.
The magic e kit contains 9 hands-on activities for practicing building and reading words with the magic e rule. Several activities are best suited for direct instruction while others are perfect for use in your independent centers.
Word cards with and without the magic e star prompt are contained in the kit as well as sentences containing word pairs.
If you teach first grade and are introducing the magic e concept to the class or if you teach second grade and have students who need additional support, the activities contained within the magic e kit may just do the trick.
