Teaching the doubling spelling rule

Teaching the doubling spelling rule can be fun! It is one of the first rules we teach our young readers and writers. The doubling rule states that if a one syllable word ends with a vowel and a consonant, double the consonant before adding the ending (e.g. -ed, -ing). It’s often helpful to provide examples where this rule applies and where this rule does not apply. This file folder activity has your students decide if the word meets (or doesn’t meet) those criteria and if the doubling spelling rule would apply to the word. This file folder activity easy to assemble. Laminate the folder so that you can use them over and over again!
