We created these “sweet” little word family activities just for Valentine’s Day! Teaching word families is often one of the first steps in teaching students to decode words. Introducing word families helps students recognize “chunks” within a word. Working with word families also builds phonemic awareness. When we teach these word chunks (aka as “phonograms”) we group words that have a similar pattern allowing students to read the words quickly by learning the pattern within the word. Because these words have a predictable pattern, often differing by only one sound, we say they all belong to a “word family”. The words within a word family rhyme as they have the same ending.
Students just love word family activities! Once they learn the word pattern, the words are easy to read! Sorting activities are perfect for introducing word families. You can either use word families with the same short vowel sound or a different short vowel sound. The Word Family Valentine activity is a great activity for introducing word families. You can easily differentiate the activity by choosing which word family to use and which words to use within the word family.
When you download our first word family activity you will receive over 200 hearts containing words belonging to 21 word families. This activity is easily differentiated as you choose how many and which word families to use. Perfect for independent centers!
The Word Family Valentines activity can be found in my online Teachers Pay Teachers store.
Our second word family Valentine’s Day activity includes 15 word family templates with 63 colorful word family pictures printed on hearts. Students simply sort the pictures/words into their corresponding word family. Sorting activities are ideal when introducing the concept of word families.
The Be My Valentine Word Families activity can also be found in my TpT store.
Hope you enjoy these activities and have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
